Remembering Manchester, 1979

On May 8th, 1979, a devastating fire broke out at the Woolworth’s store on Piccadilly, Manchester. Eleven people—ten shoppers and one staff member—tragically lost their lives. The fire started in the furnishing department, believed to have been caused by a damaged electrical wire hidden behind stacked furniture.

Although the store met the legal fire safety requirements of the time, the inquiry revealed several critical factors that contributed to the disaster:

  • No sprinkler system: Shops were not legally required to have sprinklers, and even today, many still aren’t.
  • Polyurethane foam in furniture: Cheap, legal, but highly flammable. When ignited, it produced thick, toxic smoke that obscured exit signs and made escape nearly impossible.
  • Barred windows: Fire crews struggled to remove iron bars from upper windows, delaying rescue efforts.

Most victims were trapped in the restaurant on the second floor, where smoke was so dense that exits could not be found.

The Turning Point: Fire Safety Regulations

It wasn’t until nine years later, in 1988, that the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations came into effect. These regulations required manufacturers to use safer materials and introduced the fire safety labels we see on furniture today.

These labels are not just a legal requirement—they are a life‑saving measure. They show that the furniture has been tested and meets strict standards for ignition resistance and smoke toxicity.

Why SHAX Checks Fire Labels

At SHAX, we take fire safety seriously. Checking fire labels is about more than compliance—it’s about protecting lives.

Compliance: Ensures furniture meets UK fire safety standards. ✅ Safety: Prevents the use of dangerous materials like untreated polyurethane foam. ✅ Peace of mind: Customers know their homes and workplaces are safer.

The Woolworth’s fire is a stark reminder of what can happen when safety is compromised. By checking fire labels, we help ensure that tragedies like Manchester 1979 are never repeated.

Fire Labels Save Lives

Every time you see a fire safety label, remember: it’s not just a tag. It’s proof that the furniture you’re buying has been designed to resist ignition and reduce toxic smoke.

At SHAX, we don’t just check labels to tick a box—we check them to keep you, your family, and your community safe.
