• Test smoke alarms

• Check all locks, doors and windows work properly
• Find emergency exits and ensure keys are accessible

Take photos and record readings immediately:

• Electricity meter reading
• Gas meter reading (if applicable)
• Water meter reading (if fitted)
• Take timestamped photos of all meters

• Find out current electricity supplier
• Find out current gas supplier
• Contact suppliers to register as new occupier
• Provide opening meter readings
• Choose or switch tariffs if desired
• Set up direct debits

• Confirm water supplier
• Set up water account
• Check for leaks under sinks
• Run all taps (hot and cold)
• Run showers and check water pressure
• Flush all toilets
• Check hot water system is working
• Check outside taps if present

Take photos before moving furniture in:

• Photograph every room
• Photograph existing damage
• Photograph walls, ceilings and floors
• Photograph garden and exterior
