About SHAX

SHAX is a dedicated local charity working to support individuals affected by homelessness throughout Dumfries and Galloway. By operating retail and reuse initiatives, SHAX offers affordable furniture and household items, generating essential income to sustain our community-focused services.

Position overview

We are seeking a reliable, hardworking, and customer-focused Warehouse Assistant to join our dynamic team in Dumfries. This role is integral to our mission, involving the collection and delivery of donated goods and representing SHAX within the community.

Working hours

  • Total hours: 35 hours per week
  • Shift pattern: Monday to Saturday
  • Typical shifts: 9:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • One weekly shift: 8:00 am to 3:00 pm
  • Flexibility: Occasional flexibility may be required to meet operational needs

Key responsibilities

  • Collections & deliveries: Perform multi-drop collections and deliveries of donated furniture and household items across the region.
  • Stock handling: Load, unload, and transport stock safely between vehicles, warehouses, and retail premises.
  • Customer service: Provide a professional and friendly service to donors, customers, colleagues, and partners.
  • Warehouse support: Assist with stock handling, sorting, and storage within the warehouse.
  • Retail assistance: Support retail operations, including customer service and sales activities as needed.
  • Vehicle maintenance: Maintain vehicle cleanliness and perform basic daily vehicle checks.
  • Health & safety: Adhere to health and safety procedures at all times.
  • Additional duties: Undertake any other reasonable duties required to support SHAX operations effectively.

Essential requirements

  • Driving licence: Full UK driving licence
  • Driving confidence: Comfortable driving company vehicles and completing multi-drop routes
  • Physical fitness: Good level of physical fitness for regular heavy lifting and manual handling
  • Teamwork: Ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Reliability: Reliable, punctual, and organised approach to work
  • Professionalism: Smart appearance and courteous manner when representing SHAX
  • Communication: Good communication and customer service skills

Pre-employment checks

Candidates will need to provide:

  • A completed SHAX application form
  • Proof of right to work in the UK
  • A valid DVLA Share Code for a driving licence check
  • An Enhanced PVG Scheme Membership check (cost covered by SHAX)

    • Copies of the right to work documents listed on your checklist
    • Clear copies of the front and back of Full UK Driving Licence
    • A valid DVLA Share Code for a driving licence check (see job description)
